What F9E1 Means
F9E1 means the dishwasher is not draining. Whirlpool's published checks are the filter, the drain hose and the disposer connection - all things an owner can inspect before anyone is called out. Standing water in the tub is the visible symptom.
Common Causes of F9E1
- Filter clogged with food debris or grease
- Kinked, pinched or clogged drain hose
- Blocked air gap at the sink
- Blocked household drain or disposer
- Failing drain pump
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the dishwasher off at its switch or breaker first, then bail out standing water with a jug and a sponge so you can work. Lift out the lower rack and twist out the filter assembly; wash it thoroughly under running water with a soft brush, including the fine mesh. Check the sump area beneath for broken glass, labels or seeds. Behind the machine, make sure the drain hose is not kinked or pinched by the cabinet. Under the sink, check the hose is not crushed and that the air gap, if fitted, is not blocked.

- Isolate power before reaching into the sump - there is wiring below the tub.
- Drain pump replacement is technician work.
- Broken glass in a sump is a cut hazard; use a wet vacuum rather than fingers.
