This article exists mainly to tell you not to open something. A microwave whose light, fan, turntable and display all work but which does not heat has almost certainly failed in its high-voltage section: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor, the transformer, or the interlock system that authorises them.
The Safety Point, Plainly
A microwave's high-voltage capacitor can store a charge capable of killing a person, and it can hold that charge after the appliance has been unplugged and sitting unused. Part of a technician's routine is bleeding that charge away deliberately, with insulated tools, before a hand goes anywhere near it. There is no version of this repair that is safe with a screwdriver and a video, and that includes replacing a blown fuse, because the fuse almost always blew for a reason that is still in there. This applies to over-the-range, countertop and built-in models alike.
What You Can Safely Check
- Test it properly. Heat one cup of room-temperature water for one minute at full power. If the water is warmer afterwards, the oven is heating and the real complaint may be about power level or cycle choice.
- Power level. A microwave left on a reduced power level takes far longer than anyone expects and reads as a failure. Put it back to full power and run the test again.
- Demo or Sabbath mode. Some models have a showroom mode that runs the display, light and turntable without producing heat. The manual explains how to exit it.
- Door closure. A door that does not close squarely, or a damaged latch, keeps the interlocks from allowing operation. Never defeat or tape a latch; those interlocks exist to stop the oven emitting with the door open.
- Circuit. Confirm the outlet is live, since a tripped GFCI or breaker on a shared circuit produces odd partial behaviour.
Symptoms That Mean Stop Using It Now
Unplug it and stop using it if you see arcing or sparks inside, smell burning, find scorch marks around the door seal or on the cavity wall, hear a loud buzz followed by no heat, or find the door damaged or not latching. Over-the-range units complicate this, because the vent fan and cooktop light keep working while the oven itself is unsafe, which makes it tempting to leave in service.
Repair or Replace

Over-the-range and built-in models are a different calculation, because replacing one brings cabinetry, ducting or a trim kit into it.
