Two complaints arrive together often enough to treat as one: a cycle that runs far longer than the display first promised, and a machine that seems not to be filling. Both usually come down to what the washer is waiting for.
Why the Time Grows
The number shown at the start is an estimate. Load-sensing machines weigh the load, then adjust fill, wash and spin time, and they will add time when something is not going to plan. Common reasons a cycle stretches:
- Slow fill. The washer waits for a water level before it proceeds, so a restricted supply directly adds minutes.
- Out-of-balance spins. The machine refills and redistributes rather than spinning hard on a lopsided load, and each attempt costs time.
- Suds. Too much detergent, or non-HE detergent in an HE machine, triggers extra rinses to clear the foam.
- Cycle and options. Heavy-duty, sanitise, extra rinse and soak options all add real time.
Checks for Filling
- Confirm both taps behind the machine are fully open. A tap left half closed after an install is extremely common.
- Look for kinked fill hoses where the washer was pushed back.
- Switch the water off, unscrew the fill hoses at the machine and check the small inlet screens for grit and scale. Rinse them; do not poke them with anything metal.
- Check that hot and cold are not swapped, which produces odd behaviour on temperature-sensing cycles.
- If the house has low pressure generally, or work has recently been done on the plumbing, that will show up here first.
When to Call
If both taps are open, the hoses are clear and the screens are clean but the machine still fills slowly or not at all, the inlet valve, the pressure sensing system or the control are the likely causes, and those are inside the cabinet. The same is true of a washer that fills and keeps filling, or one that drains while it fills. Unplug it and book a Whirlpool washer repair visit, mentioning whether you can hear water entering the drum at all.
