What AF Means
AF, shown as "Check Vent" on some panels, is the older Whirlpool way of reporting an airflow restriction. The dryer has detected that air is not moving through the drum at the rate it should - the same underlying condition as F4E3 on newer controls.
Common Causes of AF
- Lint screen blocked or film-coated
- Duct crushed, kinked or packed with lint
- Exterior vent hood stuck, or nesting inside it
- Overly long or convoluted vent run
- Blower wheel obstruction inside the dryer
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker first. Clean the lint screen properly, including washing off softener film with warm water and a brush if water beads on the mesh. Pull the machine forward, disconnect the duct and pull the lint out of both the duct and the dryer outlet. Check the duct is not crushed where the dryer sits back. Outside, confirm the vent flap opens freely when the dryer runs. If the run is long, has several bends, or uses foil concertina duct, have it replaced with rigid duct - that is the permanent answer to repeat AF codes.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Isolate the dryer from power before moving it or opening the duct.
- Blower wheel and internal ducting work is technician territory.
- Do not run a dryer with a known restriction to "get one more load done" - this is the classic lint-fire setup.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
