What F4E3 Means

Whirlpool documents F4E3 as Restricted Air Flow: the lint screen or the vent is blocked, or the vent run is crushed, kinked or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running with the code displayed, and any key clears it from the screen - but a restricted vent is the condition behind dryer fires, so this is one code to act on rather than dismiss.

Common Causes of F4E3

  • Lint screen clogged, or coated with softener film
  • Flexible duct crushed behind the dryer
  • Lint packed into the duct run or the wall vent
  • Exterior vent flap stuck shut, or blocked by a bird nest
  • Vent run too long, or with too many bends

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Stop the dryer and unplug it, or switch off its breaker, before going behind the machine. Pull the lint screen and clean it by hand - if water sits on the mesh instead of flowing through, wash it with a brush and detergent to remove fabric-softener film. Then look at the flexible duct from the dryer to the wall: it should be short, as straight as possible, and free of crushing where the machine sits back against it. Disconnect it and clear the lint out. Go outside and check the exterior vent flap opens when the dryer runs. Foil concertina duct, long runs and multiple elbows all cause this code and are worth replacing with rigid or semi-rigid duct.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Always isolate the dryer before reaching behind it or disconnecting the duct.
  • Roof vents and long internal duct runs are a job for a duct-cleaning service rather than a ladder and a coat hanger.
  • Gas dryers must not be moved far without care for the flexible gas connector - leave that to a technician.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

F4E3 FAQ

You can, but restricted airflow raises the internal temperature and lint is highly flammable. Clear it before the next load.

At least once a year, more often with a long run or a big household.
