A washer that thumps hard enough to move itself is not just noisy; it is wearing its own bearings and suspension every time it does it. Most causes are things an owner can find in ten minutes.
If the Machine Is Newly Delivered
Front-load washers ship with transit bolts through the rear panel that clamp the drum so it cannot swing in transport. If they were never removed, the first spin is dramatic and the machine can damage itself. Check the back panel against your installation instructions, remove any bolts you find, and keep them for a future move. This applies only to front-loaders, and only once.
Levelling and Floor
- Push down on each corner in turn. Any rock at all means a foot is not carrying weight.
- Adjust the levelling feet until the cabinet sits firm, check with a spirit level front to back and side to side, then tighten the lock nuts against the cabinet.
- A springy timber floor makes a well-levelled washer bounce anyway. A sheet of plywood spreading the load across more joists often helps.
- Stacked or pedestal installations must be secured with the manufacturer's kit, not improvised.
The Load
- One heavy item on its own, such as a bath mat, a rug or a duvet, is the classic cause. Add a couple of towels for balance or wash it separately as the manual advises.
- Do not pack the drum tight. Clothes must be able to move for the machine to distribute them.
- Bulky items that absorb a lot of water land on one side as they get heavy. Pause, redistribute by hand and restart the spin.
When It Is Mechanical
If the machine is level, the load is sensible and it still walks or makes a loud rumble or grinding in the spin, the suspension rods or springs on a top-loader, or the shock absorbers and bearings on a front-loader, become the suspects. A drum with obvious play when you push it, a loud metallic scrape, or a burning smell means stop using it and call.
