Nobody can tell you what a repair needs until they know exactly which machine you own. Whirlpool builds several variants of the same-looking product in a single model year, and the wiring diagram, the part numbers and the service bulletins all key off the model number rather than the shape of the cabinet. The serial number narrows it further, to a production run and a rough build date.
Where the Rating Plate Usually Hides
Whirlpool moves the plate between product families and model years, so treat this as a list of first places to look rather than a promise:
- French-door and side-by-side refrigerators: on a side wall inside the fresh-food compartment, often at eye level, or on the ceiling of that compartment near the front.
- Top-freezer refrigerators: on a side wall inside the fresh-food section, sometimes behind a crisper drawer.
- Dishwashers: on the edge of the inner door or on the tub rim, readable only with the door open.
- Ranges and wall ovens: on the frame behind the storage drawer, on the oven frame with the door open, or behind a kick panel.
- Front-load washers and dryers: around the door opening or on the door frame itself.
- Top-load washers: under the lid on the rim of the tub opening, or on the rear of the cabinet.
- Over-the-range microwaves: on the cavity frame with the door open, or on the underside near the vent grille.
Why the Serial Number Alone Will Not Date the Machine
Whirlpool serial formats have changed over the decades, and the letter-and-digit codes that hint at a build date are not the same across every product family. Online decoders will happily return a confident year for any string you type, and they are often wrong by a full cycle. Treat any decoded date as an estimate.
The dependable cross-check is paperwork: the owner's manual usually carries a publication date on the cover, and a purchase invoice or a product registration email carries the model number verbatim. Between those two, the decade normally settles itself.
Photograph the Plate Rather Than Copying It
On a small sticker, 0 and O, 1 and I, and 5 and S all look alike, and one wrong character sends the wrong part to your door. The most useful thing you can do is take a single clear phone photo of the whole plate, including the electrical ratings printed around the numbers, and attach it when you request service. If the sticker has faded past reading, the retailer's invoice normally carries the same model number.
