A radiant glass cooktop has one way of controlling temperature at anything below full power: switch the element on and off. So an element that glows bright, fades to dark, then comes back a minute later is doing exactly what it is designed to do. On a medium setting that cycle can be quite long, and the pan holds its heat through the dark periods.
Normal, Even Though It Looks Wrong
- Glowing and dimming on any setting below high.
- Faint ticking or clicking as the element and the glass expand and contract.
- A cooling fan that runs for a while after everything is switched off, on cooktops that have one.
- The surface staying hot, and the hot-surface indicator staying lit, well after the element is off.
- A single element behaving differently from its neighbours, because elements of different sizes cycle at different rates.
Worth Reporting
- An element that never heats at all while others work.
- An element stuck on full regardless of the setting, or one that ignores the knob or pad entirely.
- Controls that respond erratically, light the wrong zone, or shut the cooktop down mid-cook.
- Any crack or chip in the glass. Stop using the cooktop and switch it off at the breaker: a cracked surface is both a shock hazard and a path for spills to reach live parts underneath.
- Burning smells, or discolouration and bubbling under the glass.
Things That Are Not the Cooktop
Poor results often come from the pan rather than the appliance. A warped or heavily domed base contacts only at the centre and heats slowly and unevenly. A pan much smaller than the element wastes most of its output around the edge. On glass, flat and heavy wins, and dragging cast iron across the surface is how it gets scratched.
For cleaning, wait until the surface is cool, use a cooktop cream and a soft cloth, and lift burnt sugar or melted plastic promptly with a proper cooktop scraper held at a shallow angle, since either will pit the glass if left.
