Two complaints get reported the same way and need different answers. Before anything else, put an oven thermometer on the middle rack, set 350°F, and read it once the oven has finished preheating and cycled a few times. That reading decides everything that follows.
If It Heats, but Not to the Right Temperature
An oven that settles consistently above or below its setpoint is usually calibrated wrong or has a drifting temperature sensor rather than a dead element.
- Many Whirlpool ovens have an owner-adjustable temperature calibration in the settings menu, typically within a limited range. Your manual gives the sequence for your model. Use it if the oven is consistently off by a modest amount.
- Expect the temperature to swing. Ovens cycle around a setpoint rather than holding it flat, and a thermometer that reads a little either side of 350 during a cycle is normal.
- Rule out habit first: opening the door repeatedly, crowding racks so air cannot move, or using dark or glass bakeware without adjusting will all read as “the oven is wrong”.
If It Will Not Heat At All
- Check the clock and mode. A timed bake that has ended, a delay start left set, or a Sabbath mode will all leave an oven that refuses to come on. So will a control lock.
- Check the breaker. On an electric range or wall oven, losing one leg of the 240-volt supply can leave the display and even the cooktop working while the oven does not heat.
- Look at the bake element if it is exposed. Blistering or a visible break is a clear finding, though plenty of failed elements look perfectly normal, and many current ovens hide the bake element under the oven floor where you cannot see it at all.
- Gas ovens: confirm the supply valve is open and other gas appliances work. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility from outside.
What Needs a Technician
Elements, igniters, temperature sensors and control boards mean working around 240-volt wiring or a gas connection. Several of them produce the same symptom, so guessing at parts gets expensive. Book a Whirlpool oven repair visit and bring the thermometer reading with you, since a measured number turns a vague complaint into a short diagnosis.
