A refrigerator gets rid of heat through its condenser coils. When those coils are blanketed in dust and pet hair, the heat leaves more slowly, the compressor runs longer to reach the same temperature, and the whole appliance works harder than it was designed to. Cleaning them is the one piece of refrigerator maintenance an owner can genuinely do.
Unplug It First
Pull the plug before anything else, or switch off the breaker if the outlet is not reachable. There is a condenser fan down there that can start on its own while the appliance is powered, and a vacuum nozzle in a moving fan is a bad afternoon. Do not skip this step because the appliance happens to be quiet at that moment.
Where the Coils Are on a Whirlpool
Two layouts are common, and your manual will say which you have:
- Behind the base grille. The grille at the bottom front unclips or unscrews, and the coils sit just inside with the condenser fan next to them.
- At the rear. Older and some simpler models carry the coils on the back panel, which means pulling the appliance forward to reach them.
Doing It Without Damaging Anything
- Use a vacuum with a brush attachment and a narrow coil brush. Work along the fins, not across them, so you do not bend them flat.
- Take the dust off the fan blades and the surrounding floor as well; that is where most of it settles.
- Do not use water, and do not poke at the aluminium tubing. A pierced tube is not a repair, it is a replacement.
- Plug the appliance back in and confirm it starts and cools before you push it back into place.
How Often, Realistically
Once or twice a year suits most kitchens. A home with shedding pets, a smoker, or a refrigerator in a workshop or garage will want it more often, and you will see why the first time you open the grille. If the appliance is also running warm, clean the coils and then give it a full day before judging the result, because it takes that long for the cabinet to pull back down.
