Deal With the Food First
Put a thermometer into a glass of water, leave it on a middle shelf for a few hours, then read it. The FDA figure to aim for is 40°F or lower in the fresh-food compartment. If perishables such as milk, meat, soft cheese, leftovers or cut fruit have been above 40°F for more than two hours, the guidance is to discard them rather than judge by smell or appearance. Move whatever you want to keep into a cooler with ice, or into the freezer, before you start checking anything.

- Setting and modes: confirm nobody nudged the fresh-food setpoint, and check your manual for a showroom or demo mode that runs the lights and display without cooling.
- Air vents: a cereal box or a tall bottle parked against the vent that feeds the fresh-food section is enough to starve it. Leave a few inches clear around every vent.
- Doors: a crisper pushed off its runner can hold a door open by a fraction, and warm room air pours in all day. Look along each gasket for gaps, and check nothing inside the cabinet is fouling the door as it shuts.
- Condenser coils: unplug the refrigerator first, then vacuum the coils behind the lower grille or at the rear as your manual describes, and plug it back in afterwards.
- Frost pattern: look at the back wall inside the freezer. Light even frost is normal. A thick slab of ice in one area is worth mentioning when you call.
What It Usually Turns Out to Be
Once the easy items check out, the common findings are an evaporator fan that has stalled or slowed, frost blocking the evaporator because a defrost component has failed, or a damper that no longer opens to let cold air through to the fresh-food side. Each of those repairs means pulling interior panels and working around live wiring, so they belong with a technician rather than a weekend project. Damage caused during a repair attempt can also put warranty coverage at risk if the work was not done by an authorized technician, so read your warranty terms before opening anything.
Two details are worth having ready when you call: whether you can hear the freezer fan running with the door switch held in, and whether the fresh-food temperature has been falling steadily or swinging up and down.
