A modern top-load washer will not spin at speed unless it is satisfied that the lid is locked shut. That is a safety design, not a defect: the drum in a high-speed spin is genuinely dangerous with the lid open. So when a machine washes normally but leaves the load soaking, the lock system is the first thing to look at rather than the last.
What the Lid Lock Is Telling You
- A lock light that blinks usually means the machine tried to lock the lid and did not get confirmation back. Clear anything on the lid, close it firmly and restart.
- Something caught in the strike. A sleeve or a sock hanging over the rim stops the latch engaging. So does detergent residue hardened around the catch; clean it with a damp cloth.
- A power reset is a legitimate first move. Unplug the washer for a minute, plug it back in, and run a drain and spin. Locks can latch into an error state that a reset clears.
- Do not defeat the switch. Taping or bypassing the interlock removes the only thing stopping the drum spinning with the lid open.
The Load Itself
Machines with load sensing will refuse to ramp up, or will abandon the spin and refill to redistribute, when the drum is badly out of balance. That is normal behaviour that looks like a fault.
- Open the lid and spread the load evenly around the drum rather than leaving it in one lump on one side.
- Wash a single heavy item, such as a rug or a duvet, with a couple of towels for balance, or not at all if the manual advises against it.
- Do not pack the drum. Clothes need room to move for the machine to balance them.
- Check the washer is level and all four feet are firmly down; a rocking cabinet reads as imbalance.
When It Is a Real Fault
If the lid locks properly, the load is balanced and the machine still will not spin, or if it drains but the drum never turns, then the lid-lock assembly, the drive system, the belt on models that use one, or the control are candidates. A drum that will not turn by hand, a burning smell, or a breaker that trips means stop using it.
