It tumbles but nothing dries. Where do I start?

With airflow, before any part. Clean the lint screen every load, then disconnect the dryer, pull the vent hose and check the whole run to the outside for packed lint, crushed sections or a hood flap that no longer opens. Restricted venting causes this complaint more often than every failed component combined, and heavy lint in a duct is a genuine fire hazard.

The drum turns but there is no heat.

On an electric dryer that is usually the heating element, a thermal fuse or a thermostat; on a gas dryer the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. Note that a thermal fuse rarely fails on its own - it blows because airflow was restricted, so the duct has to be cleared as well or the new fuse will follow the old one.

Is a burning smell an emergency?

Treat it as one. Stop the dryer, switch it off at the breaker, and do not run it again until it has been inspected. It may be lint against a hot component, and that is exactly the situation that starts laundry fires.

How often should the vent be cleaned?

At least once a year for most households, and more often with a long duct run, a household that dries frequently, or if you are noticing cycles taking longer. Cycle time creeping upward is the earliest warning sign you get.

Nearly every dryer complaint we attend is an airflow story. A dryer works by moving heated air through the load and out of the building, and anything that restricts that path – a lint screen left uncleaned, a crushed flexible duct behind the cabinet, a long run packed with lint, a vent hood flap painted shut – makes cycles longer, drives up the internal temperature, and eventually trips a thermal fuse or damages a heating element. That is why we look at the vent before we look at parts, and why we treat it as a safety item.

Where a component has genuinely failed the list is short and testable: heating elements and igniters, thermostats and thermal fuses, drive belts, idler pulleys, drum rollers and blower wheels. Gas models add igniter and valve-coil testing, which we carry out with the gas isolated. If a machine has failed because of restricted venting, we say so, because fitting the part without clearing the duct simply books the next visit.
