What dET Means

dET appears on Whirlpool washers fitted with the bulk detergent dispenser and means the machine cannot detect the detergent cartridge. It is a dispenser-recognition message rather than a mechanical fault, and the washer will still run standard cycles with detergent added manually.

Common Causes of dET

  • Cartridge missing, empty or not fully seated
  • Detergent residue preventing the cartridge seating
  • Sensor or dispenser actuator fault

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Pull the dispenser drawer out and check the cartridge is fitted properly and pushed fully home. Wash the drawer and housing under warm water if there is dried detergent around the seat - gel build-up stops the cartridge seating and is the usual reason. Dry, refit and restart. If you do not use the bulk dispenser at all, adding detergent directly to the drawer for each wash is fine and the message can be ignored, though it is worth having it looked at if it interferes with cycle selection.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None for removing, cleaning and refitting the cartridge.
  • The dispenser sensor and actuator are behind the panel - technician work.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
