What Sud Means
Sud or Sd on a Whirlpool front-load washer means the machine has detected a suds lock: so much foam that the pump is moving air and bubbles rather than water. The washer pauses and runs its own suds-reduction routine, which is why the cycle time jumps and the drum sits still for long stretches.
Common Causes of Sud
- Non-HE detergent, or too much HE detergent
- Soft water combined with a standard dose
- Detergent residue accumulated in drum and hoses
- Very sudsy load such as heavily soiled items washed with extra detergent
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the routine finish rather than cancelling - it is adding rinses to clear the foam, and interrupting it leaves detergent in the load. Once it completes, run a Rinse and Spin to be sure. For the next wash, switch to HE detergent if you are not using it already, measure the dose rather than pouring, and halve it if you have soft water. A Clean Washer cycle with a tub cleaner clears residue built up from previous overdosing.
