Whirlpool ranges arrive in our schedule in every configuration: gas with sealed surface burners, electric with coil or radiant smoothtop surfaces, and slide-in models built into a run of cabinetry. Gas cavities depend on a glow-bar igniter that has to draw enough current to open the safety valve – an igniter that lights visibly but has weakened is the classic cause of an oven that heats slowly or not at all. Electric cavities fail at the bake or broil element, which usually shows a break or a blister when you look.

Both share the temperature sensor and the control board, so a cavity running hot or cold gets measured with a thermometer and the sensor resistance checked against the manufacturer specification before any part is named. On the surface side we test spark electrodes, switches and the spark module for gas, and elements, infinite switches and touch controls for electric. Anything gas-related that belongs to your utility rather than to the appliance is identified and handed back before we open anything.

If you smell gas at any point, stop, leave the area and call your gas utility from outside before anything else. Otherwise let the cooktop cool, lift the burner cap off and confirm it is dry, clean and seated square on the base, and clear the slots with a soft brush. Persistent clicking after that points to the spark electrode, the switch or the spark module, all of which need testing.

Test it before blaming either. Put an oven thermometer on the centre rack, set 350°F, and let the cavity settle for twenty minutes. A reading well off the setting means the temperature sensor, the element or a relay on the control, not your baking.

That is normal until the cavity cools - the lock is designed to hold at high temperature. Leave it and give it up to an hour and a half after the cycle ends. If it is still locked when the oven is cold, the lock motor, its switch or the control needs attention rather than force.

Yes, it narrows things down, but it is a starting point rather than a diagnosis. The same code can be caused by the sensor it names, by a corroded connector in that circuit, or by the board driving it. We measure the circuit before ordering anything.
